In a healthy system, these pathways function efficiently, allowing the brain to process sound clearly and accurately — even in challenging listening environments.

What Happens to Hearing as We Age?

As part of the natural aging process, changes can occur within the hearing system, including:

1. Fewer effective neural connections

Over time, some of the connections involved in transmitting sound information may become less efficient or decline.

2. Reduced signal clarity

Remaining auditory pathways may transmit sound signals less precisely, making it harder to distinguish speech — especially in background noise.

Together, these changes can lead to gradual hearing difficulty, particularly with clarity rather than volume alone.

Why Hearing Loss Is Often Progressive

Hearing loss is commonly described as a progressive condition, meaning it can worsen over time.

One way clinicians explain this is with the phrase:

“Use it or lose it.”

When the auditory system receives limited or unclear sound input, the brain may become less efficient at processing sound. Without appropriate intervention, these changes may continue over time.

The Connection Between Hearing and Cognitive Health

Research has identified an association between untreated hearing loss and changes in cognitive function over time.
